Dragapult Takes Over — The New Pokémon TCG Format and Its Top Decks
Dragapult Takes Over — The New Pokémon TCG Format
The post-rotation Standard format has settled, and one deck is running away with it: Dragapult ex. Here’s what’s dominating competitive play and how to counter it.
The Dragapult Engine
Dragapult ex has emerged as the format’s premier attacker thanks to a combination of factors:
- Phantom Dive hits the active for 200 damage and spreads 60 to the bench — punishing setup decks
- Strong synergy with the current draw engine and energy acceleration options
- Psychic typing dodges most current format’s resistance profiles
- Natural speed advantage over slower Stage 2 decks
Top Decks in the Meta
Based on recent tournament results and PokéBeach analysis (May 7, 2026):
| Deck | Style | Matchup vs Dragapult |
|---|---|---|
| Dragapult ex | Aggro/Spread | Mirror |
| Gardevoir ex | Control/Setup | Slightly unfavoured |
| Charizard ex | Ramp/Aggro | Even |
| Lost Zone variants | Tempo | Unfavoured |
| Miraidon ex | Aggro | Favoured (speed) |
Miraidon ex is the surprise counter — its raw speed can outpace Dragapult before the spread damage accumulates. But Miraidon struggles against Gardevoir, creating a rock-paper-scissors dynamic at the top tables.
How to Beat Dragapult
If you’re heading to a local event and expect Dragapult-heavy fields:
- Bench protection — Manaphy’s Wave Veil ability blocks spread damage to benched Pokémon. Essential tech.
- One-shot potential — Dragapult has 320 HP. You need attackers that can hit for 320+ in a single turn (Charizard ex, Roaring Moon ex).
- Speed — The longer the game goes, the more Dragapult’s spread damage adds up. Close fast or lose slowly.
- Prize mapping — Dragapult typically needs 3 attacks to take 6 prizes (2 KOs via Phantom Dive + spread). Plan your prize trade around disrupting that math.
What’s Next
Mega Evolution: Chaos Rising (May 22) will introduce new cards that could shift the meta. Mega Greninja ex in particular has the toolkit to challenge Dragapult’s dominance — Water typing hits for weakness, and Greninja historically punishes bench-heavy decks.
Until then, Dragapult is the deck to beat. Build accordingly.
